Introduction
A data warehouse is a central repository of data that is designed to support business intelligence activities. It is a powerful tool for organizations of all sizes, as it provides a unified view of the organization’s data and can help improve decision-making.
A data warehouse is a large database that is designed to store and manage data from various sources, such as transactional databases, external data sources, and operational systems. Its primary function is to provide a single, comprehensive view of the data to support business intelligence activities such as data mining, analytics, and reporting.
Components of a Data Warehouse
There are broadly three layers in a data warehouse ecosystem:
Data Sources – these are the upstream applications and systems being used by the departments within an organization to perform some business functions.
Data Warehouse – since the disparate systems used to perform different business functions are unable to provide an enterprise view of the data, we build another layer called as data warehouse where all enterprise-level data is synced in via a process called as ETL (acronym for Extract, Transform and Load)
Data Marts – these are built in order to create business centric data marts. They are built in order to cater to the different requirements for a particular business function, such as the Sales Data Mart.
